On Tuesday 17 May 2022, the Netherlands Atlantic Association and the Roosevelt Institute for American Studies organise
The Transatlantic Era at the crossroad?
Reflections on European and American policies and the Ukraine crisis
This program is based on the recently published textbook ‘The Transatlantic Era (1989-2020) in Documents and Speeches’. It discusses the thesis that the three decades between 1989 and 2020 represent a distinct transatlantic era. The question arises if Europe and North America have grown apart and if they have lost a chance in the 1990’s to become a ‘role model’ – based on democracy, human rights and market economies – in international affairs? How and why has this distinct era come to an end? How will the Ukraine war impact the relationship? Do we witness a revival of the idea of the democratic ‘West’ against authoritarian regimes?
First, Mr. Giles Scott-Smith and Mr. Bram Boxhoorn will introduce the textbook after which a panel discussion will take place on the main title.
Members of the panel are:
- Mr. Ben Knapen (former Minister of Foreign Affairs). He will remark on the European perspective.
- Ms. Laila Frank (journalist). She will remark on the American perspective.
- Mr. Ruben Brekelmas (MP, spokesperson for foreign affairs, Liberal Party (VVD)). He will remark on the perspective from NATO
The panel will be moderated by Mr. Alex Krijger.
the book The Transatlantic Era (1989-2020) in Documents and Speeches (eds. Bram Boxhoorn and Giles Scott-Smith) will be officially launced during this program.
