A Conversation with NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană: NATO in a Changing World

The Netherlands Atlantic Association hosted a keynote speech by Mr Mircea Geoană, Deputy Secretary General of NATO, on the topic “NATO in a Changing World”, followed by a conversation with the audience. The event took place on Friday the 17th of May at the The Hague Campus of the University of Leiden, Turfmarkt 99.

Mircea Geoană became NATO Deputy Secretary General in October 2019, after a distinguished domestic, European and international career. Mr Geoană is the first Deputy Secretary General from Romania, and the first from any of the countries that joined the Alliance after the end of the Cold War.

In his speech, the Deputy Secretary General focused on the challenges facing NATO in the year the Alliance marked its 75th anniversary, including in the context of the NATO Summit in Washington, Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine, NATO’s relations with its Asia-Pacific partners, and the impact of emerging and disruptive technologies.

This public event took place in the margins of an international conference on cyber security, hosted by the Netherlands. The event was hosted in collaboration with the Young Atlantic Association, Leiden University, the Clingendael Institute, the Hague Centre for Strategic Studies (HCSS), the Netherlands Defence Academy (NLDA) and the Royal Netherlands Society for War Studies (KVBK).
