Over a Decade of ‘Illiberal Democracy’ in the heart of Europe

Viktor Orbán and his Fidesz party rule Hungary since they gained a majority in the 2010 national elections. Since that time, the Hungarian democracy has been under attack and elements of a “illiberal democracy” have been introduced. What significant changes have happened in Hungary since Fidesz took power? And why has the EU been unable to act against these developments? What has the current COVID-pandemic meant for the situation in Hungary? Loes Koenders, an intern at The Netherlands Atlantic Association, interviewed Gábor Halmai, Professor of Comparative Constitutional Law.
