Public Meeting: China, the West and the Rest

On Tuesday June 18th the Netherlands Atlantic Association and Netherlands Atlantic Youth organize a program themed:

China, the West and the Rest:
The return of great power politics and its complications

China has increasingly been dominating headlines over the past years. Its spectacular growth over the past three decades has been looked upon with awe and admiration, both inside and outside the West. This rise has given China a pivotal role in the global economy. From Europe to Africa, from the America’s to the Middle-East: China’s presence is felt all over the world, perhaps most clearly through the Belt & Road initiative.

Whereas many Western countries initially welcomed the influx of Chinese goods, services and capital, now many are starting to express their concerns, with the current U.S. Administration as the most vocal critic. Are these legitimate concerns? What does this mean for the position of the West? And how will this affect its role in emerging economies and in global politics?

We will discuss these questions with leading experts providing a multifaceted perspective. Matt Ferchen (Carnegie-Tsinghua Center for Global Policy) specializes in China’s political-economic relations with emerging economies including Latin America. Mohammadbagher Forough (Leiden University) researches global geopolitical shifts including  the geopolitical and geo-economic implications of China's New Silk Road initiative, otherwise known as One Belt, One Road (OBOR) or Belt and Road (B&R) initiative.
