Lecture: Rand Waltzman of RAND Corporation

On Tuesday, March 13th the Netherlands Atlantic Youth, In cooperation with the United States Embassy, organized a lecture with Rand Waltzman (RAND Corporation).  The theme of the lecture was:

"The (Dis)information Age: Is Social Media a Threat to Democracy?".

Disinformation and cyber threats have been the talk of the town for quite a while now. The use of Social Media in the United States 2016 Presidential Election Campaign to spread propagandist information and "fake news", some reportedly by foreign agents, have added fuel to the fire. This raises the question if the workings of Social Media pose an existential threat to our Western democratic societies, and if so: what can be done to counter this threat?

On the 13th of March, Rand Waltzman discussed these topics in a small-scale setting. Waltzman is a senior information scientist at the RAND Corporation, where he recently ran a major Pentagon research program to understand the propaganda threats posed by social media technology.  Waltzman previously served as chief technology officer at Carnegie Mellon University’s Software Engineering Institute and as the program manager for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s Strategic Communications in Social Media unit.  His areas of expertise include bot detection, influence operations, disinformation, machine learning, and digital communications.
