AANMELDEN

Public Meeting: NATO's Nuclear Policy

On Monday, 23 October the Netherlands Atlantic Association organizes a public meeting on:

NATO's Nuclear Policy
Continuity or Change?

After decades of ‘non-debate’ on the role of nuclear weapons, current developments in the world – amongst others the proliferation of nuclear weapons, hybrid warfare by Russia (including the nuclear component) and the nuclear threat from the Middle East – have stimulated the debate on the role of nuclear weapons in NATO’s strategy of deterrence.

Since the NATO Summit in Warsaw in 2016, new thinking on this subject has developed. One of the central questions – among many others – of this seminar is if NATO needs to change its policies regarding nuclear deterrence? And how to make sure that all Allies support the nuclear policies that have been agreed upon?

Public Meeting: Jean-Pierre Lacroix

On Friday, 1 September the Netherlands Atlantic Association organized a discussion in Press Centre 'Nieuwspoort' with Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations of the United Nations, Mr. Jean-Pierre Lacroix. The topic of his introduction was: "What are today's challenges for UN peacekeeping? With a particular focus on the mission in Mali".

Mr. Lacroix discussed the efforts of the UN to improve the effectiveness of UN peacekeeping in complex and often dangerous circumstances, and where the political will of host countries to cooperate and to achieve peace and stability is not always guaranteed. He especially focused on MINUSMA in Mali, since this is currently one of the most important missions in which the Netherlands is participating with several hundred military, police and civilian personnel.

Speaker:

Jean-Pierre Lacroix (Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, UN)

Moderator:

Hester Somsen (Director of Security Policy, Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs)

Johan de Witt Conference

On 31 August, on the eve of the World Port Days in Rotterdam, the Netherlands Atlantic Association, the Pugno Pro Patria in Mare Foundation and the Alumni Association of the Royal Navy Institute (KIM) jointly organized the Johan de Witt Conference 2017. The theme of this year’s conference was: Russia’s Maritime Ambitions.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization has dominated the Atlantic waters for decades. However, in the last 10 years Allies have neglected the maritime domain, and Russia has seized this opportunity to expand its maritime force. This show of power is a direct threat to free world trade and maritime security in the waters around Europe. During the Johan de Witt Conference 2017 Russia’s actions and underlying objectives were interpreted, and the consequences for European navies were expolored.

A report of the conference will be published here shortly.

Speakers:

Moderator:

Julian Lindley-French (Vice President, Atlantic Treaty Association)

Public Meeting: NATO Summit

On Tuesday, 23 May, on the eve of the NATO Summit in Brussels, the Netherlands Atlantic Association and the Netherlands Institute of International Relations ‘Clingendael’ organised a debate in the Parkhotel in The Hague on 'NATO in the Trump Era'. In his first 100 days in office Trump has given contradictory signals about the importance of the Alliance. A constant factor in his statements, however, is the emphasis on the need for increased defense spending by many NATO member states.

Read a report of the meeting. You can watch a livestream video of the event on the Facebook page of the Clingendael Institute.
