The Ukraine Crisis as explosive anachronism

The Ukraine crisis is often analyzed in terms of 19th-century power politics. According to Jaap de Wilde, there are a couple of anomalies to be detected in these terms. For example: a full-scale war between two major powers – the historical norm – is very unlikely to happen. Firstly, this war would result in mutual destruction. Yet, secondly, going to war is seen as a failure, not a success.
