The long shadow. Victory, defeat and grand strategy
Victory and defeat greatly influence behavior of post-war states. Reflecting on a wider dissertation, transatlantic scholar Paul van Hooft argues the following: victory leads to a greater willingness to use force and strengthens national policymakers, while defeat does the opposite. The core beliefs of policymakers will also change as a result of war. Whereas the US refrained from interwar isolationism, France reached its isolationism peak.
