The year 1989 has been a turning point in human history as it was the year in which the Berlin Wall fell and the Cold War ended. In this article, Sergey Radchenko examines what 1989 meant to one of its chief architects: Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. To do this, Radchenko looks at the role of Gorbachev in some key events leading up to the end of the Cold War.
