After You, Please? Enablement and Deterrence

Enablement is a core pillar of deterrence. The ability to move large-scale forces and resources across NATO’s Area of Responsibility (AOR) during an emergency safely and securely is critical to the messaging that is also vital for credible deterrence. However, according to Julian Lindley-French, Allies must be under no illusion: If Allies see enablement as an alternative to fighting, a fundamental principle of Alliance will be crucially undermined.
